Efficiency is key to the well-being of your HBPC practice. Here are some strategies for boosting efficiency:
- Understand and document current workflows and processes to avoid task duplication
- Create an effective intake process that collects necessary information and forms, and introduces services, so providers can focus on patient care during visits
- Implement triage protocols that allow staff to work to the top of their licensure and help minimize the number of messages providers need to “touch”
- Confirm appointment date and times for all visits in advance, including communicating with facilities (e.g., assisted living, group homes, senior living communities) so patients are prepared for the visit, are in their rooms, and have their medication lists available
- Minimize travel time with an organized and effective geographic scheduling and routing process
- Optimize your electronic health record (EHR) with appropriate templates and macros/smart phrases to make documentation easier for providers while maintaining compliance
- Review charts and schedules in advance to ensure the necessary supplies are available and providers have a general plan for each visit
For more tips on enhancing efficiency in your practice, consider attending the virtual American Academy of Home Care Medicine (AAHCM) Preconference presented by HCCI on Thursday, October 22, 2020 (see information above). During the preconference, HCCI will offer a session entitled, Practice Productivity and Reimbursement.
