A Nurse's Journey to Care for the Caregiver: A House Calls Story

There are 53 million Americans providing unpaid care to a loved one. This is an immense display of love, and care. But, on the other hand, it can take an immense toll on those who provide the support. Burnout, health issues, and managing kids and parents, can become overwhelming without the right support system.

For years, a middle-aged son in Mississippi cared for his mother, who was living with advanced dementia and psychosis. He bathed her, dressed her, fed her—until the disease progressed beyond what he could manage alone. She became combative, anxious, and unreachable. He was exhausted, overwhelmed, and on the verge of placing her in a facility.

Then, he found a nurse practitioner who makes house calls. The provider spent two hours with the family during the first visit—adjusting medications, evaluating the home environment, and offering emotional support. He followed up daily, knowing the son’s frustration was at a breaking point.

Within a week, everything changed. The mother was calmer.

She could be dressed, bathed, and fed without resistance. She followed directions. Her son, once desperate, found peace in her stability. Eventually, they moved together to Atlanta, continuing their journey with dignity and hope. This is what home-based primary care makes possible.

At the Home Centered Care Institute, we support clinicians who meet patients and families where they are—physically, emotionally, and medically. We train them, equip them, and help them build sustainable practices that transform lives. Every story like this reminds us: care isn’t just about medicine. It’s about presence, patience, and the power of being there.
