Course Overview

This online course provides home-based medical care providers with practical strategies to assess and address caregiver burden in primary, palliative, and hospice settings. Learners will explore the multidimensional impacts of caregiving, apply validated assessment tools and interdisciplinary approaches, and implement targeted interventions using community resources. The course also covers Caregiver Training Codes, which are CMS-billable codes that support reimbursement for caregiver education.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Define caregiver burden and describe its physical, emotional, social, and financial impacts on professional and informal caregivers of homebound patients.
  • Identify risk factors and warning signs of caregiver burden using validated screening tools and clinical observations.
  • Connect caregivers to appropriate community resources (e.g., respite care, support groups, transportation, home-delivered meals) based on assessed needs and local availability.
  • Document caregiver burden assessments and referrals appropriately to support care planning, team communication, and quality reporting.

Audience

This online course is intended for home-based primary care providers, as well as coders, practice managers, and operations staff.

Estimated Time to Complete

30 minutes. In order to earn credit for participation in this activity, the learner must complete a
5-question post-test with a passing score of 80% or better with unlimited attempts.
